“Safe Harbor” is the third painting in a series of paintings commemorating my sailing trip from Annapolis to Gloucester aboard the Schooner Adventurer for the 2022 Gloucester Schooner Festival. This was my first time seeing the historic harbor from the ocean approach. It took my breath away. The scene welcoming us was right out of a Winslow Homer and Fitz Henry Lane painting. A Friendship Sloop was outbound as we approached Ten Pound Island with its harbor entrance lighthouse and behind was the Schooner Roseway at her pier by the old manufacturing building on Mayflower Ledge Island. My intent was to convey the romance of the by-gone age of sail and the mystique of this beautiful harbor which is a safe harbor on what can be a dangerous coast to sailors of old and today. The color palette is simple and bright to celebrate a happy arrival of our destination on a perfect day of sailing.
